FEDERAL DIRECTOR

Nothing but silence greeted Alex’s declaration. Lucky Tony raised an eyebrow and Alex could see him calculating the implications.

"What do you mean they came for you?" he asked at last.

"During the last five years, the Germans have made at least two attempts to interfere with this country," Alex explained. "In thirty-three they tried to start a war among America’s sorcerers, and last year they tried to assassinate the Secretary of War when he was here in New York."

"I never heard any of that," Connie said, his eyes wide.

"No," Lucky Tony said. "You wouldn’t have. Those are the kinds of things the government would have hushed up. If I had to guess, the only reason the Germans would be mad at Alex would be if he had something to do with ruining their plans. Trust me," he went on, "our boy Alex is good at that."

Alex stifled a chuckle despite the pain in his leg.

"Why did they come after you now?" Lucky Tony went on.

"I don’t know," Alex lied. "Maybe they’re up to something again. I’ll tell Sorsha, she’ll tell the FBI to keep an eye out."

"Speaking of law enforcement," Lucky Tony said, standing. "Everybody without a gun permit, clear out, and get the Thompsons put away in the vault."

Without a further word, half the men picked up the guns, swept up most of the casings, and vanished into the back. It was none too soon, for almost as soon as they were gone, a car pulled up along the curb. Before whoever drove the car reached the building, a chorus of tires screeched up behind him.

"Dr. Phillips," Lucky Tony said as a short, older man with a severe face appeared in the open doorway. "Over here."

The man entered, carrying the same kind of doctor’s valise that Alex used for his kit. He was short and wide, with a bald pate and a strip of dark hair around the back of his head. Unlike the other men in the room, he wore a bow tie around the collar of a neatly pressed shirt and a suit the color of rust.

"Boss," Connie said, looking out at the street. "Looks like Feds."

That startled Alex. He’d expected the police, most likely in force, but if the Feds were here, that meant they knew something.

Maybe this shooting wasn’t about me, he thought.

"Are there any more wounded?" the doctor said, kneeling down by Alex’s bleeding leg.

"Just him," Tony said. "If you’ll excuse me, Doctor, I need to go greet our guests."

He set his face in a neutral expression and headed for the door.

"Where are you shot?" Dr. Phillips asked as he took in the blood oozing out of Alex’s trousers.

"Felt like it went through my calf and then hit me in the thigh," Alex said. When Phillips gave him a quizzical look, he went on. "I was prone at the time."

"That would explain it," Phillips said in a perfunctory tone. "I’m going to have to cut your trousers off," he added, opening his bag. "Here, drink this.
